Reflect: NY to Japan

Hey guys! Sorry for the delay on the blog. It's been a while since I posted an entry but I'm glad that I can post to you guys now! If you didn't know, I went on my first tour and it was something else to say the least. It started off from a "Kick off" show at San Francisco's Skratchpad, the 2011 DMC USA Finals in New York, and then to Japan for the Positive Omen Tour. Ever since I've been back, I've been busy with life so now I can share my experience with you all!

2011 DMC USA Finals

Congrats to DJ Vajra who took 1st place at this years DMC USA Finals! He had a really good set just as a DJ! Sometimes simple is better than technical and he utilized his skills and today's technology perfectly that night. The highlight of the night was being back stage with the other judges and Christie Z saying, "This is DJ Cheese!" I totally was like, "What the...your DJ Cheese!" Truly a blessing to meet him, be a judge, and to showcase at the highest level for the most decorated DJ Battle running in the world.

Positive Omen Japan Tour 2011 Part 1

Positive Omen Japan Tour Part 2

After New York, I took a flight all the way to Japan for a tour I did with DJs Quest, DnZ, and Alf. I haven't been on the road like this so I really didn't know what to expect. Japan is another world, another mindset, another sense of being. The whole time I was there, I was just in awe and it felt surreal. The tour itself consisted of five different cities within a weeks span. We went from Shibuya-Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Okinawa, back up to Roppongi-Tokyo, and finally ended in Shibuya-Tokyo. I'll say there was a lot of traveling (taxi, train, bullet train, plane), carrying a lot of luggage and merchandise, and of course hella DJing!

Me in Roppongi

Big shout out to all that helped make this tour possible for me! Christie-Z, Tyron Daniels, Positive Omen, Skratchpad, 4onefunk, and anyone else I may have forgotten!

Tour! SFC to NYC, and Japan...Damn!

Hey Folks!  Peace and Blessings!  It's been awhile since I've posted a blog so I wanted to start off by saying I've been busy with DJ life, summer school, and my close homies getting married (Congrats Carlo & Rey!)

Anyway, after all the mayhem, there is more!  I'm going on tour!  First leg is gonna be a "Kick-Off" show in San Francisco's Rockit Room for Skratchpad.  The day after, I fly to New York for the DMC USA Finals as a judge and I'm doing a set as well.

Finally, I'll be flying straight from New York to Japan for "The Positive Omen" Tour from August 8th-14th. The tour will feature DJs. Alf of Hip Hop Slam, DnZ of The Amazing Zoo Crew, Quest of Bullet Proof Scratch Hamsters, and myself, Mista-B of 4onefunk.  The tour is meant to be a Tsunami benefit for all the people that has suffered in Japan due to all the tragedies.  It's also meant to inspire folks with music.

The Art of "Beat Juggling" with Shortkut

Kid Dragon Beat Juggling in a Battle vs Jr. Flo

The art of "Beat Juggling" is one that is one of the the most creative things to do in the realm of Hip Hop DJing.  It can start from learning how to mix, scratch, and rocking doubles.  How far it goes depends on how you move with the music.  It's an "open ended" art and there are no specific rules to it.  All you got to do is make it sound nice!

Beat Juggling Pioneers

In an interview I did with DJ Shortkut for Mixcrate, I asked him his feelings about the art.  Below is a link to listen and download.  This is an educational piece that is meant to inform, engage, and inspire DJ enthusiast.  Enjoy!

Showcase!

Hi folks!  Recently, I had a series of showcase performances in the Bay, Texas, and Seattle.  I haven't been able to put out any videos because I've been busy with Grad-School, my teaching jobs, other workshops, and my brother recently got married.  There were little things in between but you all get the idea.  Now, I've made a highlight video of my recent showcases and I wanted to share with you all.  It's a blend of old and new material, along with a few new toys at my arsenal.  Oh yeah, we still rock the vinyl set when needed.

This summer, there is a bunch in store.  As a member of 4OneFunk, we'll be rocking out every last Sat of the month in the summer.  As a member of Skratchpad, we'll be rocking out every first weds of the month.  There are some "DJ" gigs in between, as well day-time events, and more mixtapes and other various projects.  Thanks again for the support and be well everyone.

Stay tuned for my own Personal Site: Coming Soon...

Skratch Lounge: One Year Anniversary

It's been a year since I went to Seattle and in that time, I've gotten to experience various DJ Scratch Hip Hop Scenes around the planet.  There is something about the scene in Seattle that shows me their true love of their own scene.  Every DJ there went out of their own way to reach the Baltic Room and contribute to the event.  A grand total of about 12 turntables and 8 mixers were Counted. The Groove Techs Bamboo and Spinja and the Seattle Hip Hop DJ Scene provided the equipment out of their own strength.  There were even people bringing their own personal tables to put equipment on.

Me and Snayk Eyez decided to fly up and take part in the Skratch Lounge activities.  It was truly an amazing experience because of all the love that night.  In a way, it felt like a big "B-Boy" style "Scratch Circle."  Here is the video of our trip to Seattle Washington in the great northwest.

Skratch Lounge is every 1st Thursday of the month at The Baltic Room in Seattle Washington and it's free...Just like Skratchpad.

Cr(e)ate >Output< (Mixcrate Edition)

Hey folks, as you may of heard, I had an exclusive mix that was supposed to be out on URB online.  Unfortunately, the planet does revolve and time waits for no man.  I've patiently waited for this mix to be release to you all and now I've decided to take it to Mixcrate...The Mecca of DJ mixes at the moment.
It's good to have mixcrate as an outlet for the mix and I hope you all enjoy it as a whole.  Featuring tracks and edits from Myself, F.A.M.E., B.Cause, Smoov Groovs, Onra, Reggie B, Dam Funk, and way more.  It's an audio experience that is layered with detailed care and good sonic intentions.  If you want "Hard Copy" CDs of the mix, you'll have to catch me in person at a gig, event, function, etc.
